old south high mural
Brent Finnegan -- July 17th, 2006
WHSV reported yesterday on the ongoing Downtown Renaissance initiative “to beautify the downtown area.” This particular project involved the Female Institute for Learning and Development (a program sponsored by JMU) painting a mural to cover up graffiti marring a wall on the corner of West Bruce and Old South High. The city council approved the mural, and the high school girls painted it on Sunday.

The project is designed to promote art and discourage gangs and delinquents from tagging up the neighborhood. But they probably should have used more drop cloths.

I hate to be a buzzkill, but wasn’t the point of the project to remove unwanted paint from the city?
Don’t get me wrong–I think beautification is a worthy undertaking, and something I would like to see more of. I’m not criticizing the girls, the art, the JMU program, or the HDR initiative. All I’m saying is: next time, remember to bring more drop cloths.

Does anyone know what’s to become of the sweet, Mennonite-theme mural on the Country Club Road side of the Kroger Shopping Center? It’s getting pretty flaky. Does anyone know who you’d contact to help touch it up?
i don’t know anything about that mural, though i would suspect that if/when the council decides to widen country club, they may want to re-do that one.
i doubt the HDR would have anything to do with the east side of town.
