cops crackdown on I 81 this weekend

Brent Finnegan -- August 17th, 2006

Yesterday Virginia State Police announced their newest ticketing campaign, scheduled to begin tomorrow.

They’re calling it “Operation Air, Land, & Speed II.” Sounds like a Louis Gossett Jr. movie, doesn’t it? It’s the sequel to the original “Air, Land & Speed,” in which troopers stopped over 2,500 speeders on 81, and gave out over 100 seat belt violation tickets, as well. According to police, the last campaign reduced the number of accidents, bringing the number of fatalities to zero. I searched, but could not find stats for annual fatalities on 81.

The crackdown is in effect Friday and Saturday, the 18th & 19th. “The third and final” Operation Air, Land & Speed takes place September 7 & 8, because everybody loves trilogies.

Anyone gotten a ticket yet? A friend of mine was ticketed on 64 near Waynesboro on Friday, so they may be patrolling heavily there as well.

OK – film geeks should not write such things. I even went to and Wikipedia and I have no idea where you get that. Little help for the masses?

He used to star in those Iron Eagle action movies in the 80s that would air on Saturday afternoon matinee TV.
