ESL enrollment

Brent Finnegan -- August 31st, 2006

According to Wanda Hamilton, “Half of the students in Harrisonburg’s kindergarten classes this year are expected to be in programs for English as a Second Language.” (from the DNR). She also said that the city schools’ total enrollment in ESL should be around 39 percent this year.

Wow.

According to recent stats from the Virginia Employment Commission, Harrisonburg has a little over 3,500 residents of Latino/Hispanic ethnicity, and a higher percentage of the population that speak English “less than well” compared to the state and national average. The Virginia average is 2.17 percent of “people age five and older that speak English less than well.” The national average is 4.19 percent, and Harrisonburg is 4.55 percent.

Expect a few more posts on immigration on hburgnews soon.
