not just Mexican

Brent Finnegan -- September 22nd, 2006

A brief follow-up on the subject of immigrants in Harrisonburg schools:

The Breeze reports on the number of “limited English proficiency” (LEP) students in the city schools, and finds that, while “72 percent of the international student population speak Spanish,” only 14 percent of the student immigrants are from Mexico.

I wish certain locals would stop lumping everyone together and referring to Harrisonburg’s diverse Latino population as “Mexicans.”

Also worth noting is the fact that a Chinese immigrant parent said, “Compared to the Chinese education style, the American education style has less homework,” and added that she wants HHS teachers to give her daughter more homework.
