transport, motorways & tramlines

Brent Finnegan -- January 19th, 2007

Yes, that is a reference to my favorite Radiohead song.

Everybody’s blogging about the Republican transportation package today, but I honestly don’t know how much it will impact Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. Area politicians are making non-statements about it, and since one of the major concerns of locals is 81 truck congestion, stuff like the NoVa plan is irrelevant here.

The diesel tax hike is aimed specifically at the 81 issue (in lieu of rail or toll). That won’t directly affect most residents here (unless you drive a big truck or a VW Rabbit). However, the $10 registration fee hike will effect all Virginians (which is minuscule compared to the 2007 city car tax).

If you’re interested in reading more, Chris Graham has the best analysis of the deal I’ve read today.

Republicans are really under the gun. Most wonks expect it to be scrutinized in the Senate, but pass nonetheless. Once I get some info from the city, I’ll have a better idea of how this will affect (or not affect) those of us living and driving here.

UPDATE 1/22: As I suspected, this deal (assuming it goes through) will have little or no impact on Harrisonburg. This is all for NoVa and the Hampton Roads area.

As a diesel driver who gets 42/50 MPG, I concede the extra 1.5 cents per gallon for the rest of you.

My legs get 20 miles to the burger! Yay for living, working and partying downtown. I haven’t started my car in days and really don’t miss driving all that much. Maybe I’m just a downtown junkie but ………how’s this for a new T-Shirt design for Midtowne Market

Midtowne Market, Making it convenient to never leave downtown!
