the headlines these days…

Brent Finnegan -- January 30th, 2007

Rape. Suicide. Infanticide.

I generally try to avoid posting the sensationally tragic stuff on here, but there seems to be an awful lot of it recently… Can’t really say I envy the guys that were digging through the garbage at the county landfill today. Apparently it was all for nothing, since no body was found.

I’m not trying to open up another debate on birth control and abortion here (especially since there’s already one going on Republitarian) but I couldn’t help but notice that a couple has been looking on Harrisonburg’s Craigslist for an infant to adopt. Talk about missed connections.

It is a really sad turn of events. My best friend has been waiting to adopt since the middle of last year. I hope that this brings safe haven laws to the front of people’s minds so that this choice isn’t made again.

The search has been called off but the baby was not found.

    Ditto to what finnegan said.

The real sadness of both the suicide and the dumped baby is that these people, in a society of nothing but options, felt they had exhausted all of theirs…

As for the rape, I hope they catch the jerk, and I hope all the ladies in this town take the event to heart. There is clearly no way to ever 100% protect yourself from an assault, but you have to put yourself in the most positive situations possible. Walk in pairs, carry a cell phone, grab a can of mace….

Indeed. The story says the rape occurred around midnight. Definitely a good idea to jog in pairs, especially when jogging at night.
