nevermind

Brent Finnegan -- March 25th, 2007

Acme Stove and Video is NOT dropping their video store. I was misinformed. I apologize for jumping the gun on this one. It’s not really news that I am an idiot.

It’s either a sign of the times (because of online pirating and Netflix, video rental stores are slowly going the way of video arcades) or an indication that stoves and videos don’t mix: apparently, Acme Stove & Video is now just Acme Stove. Looks like they’re liquidating their DVD and VHS inventory.

I have to say, I always thought wood stoves and videos was a strange combination. But it was never as strange as Bennie’s Beach, where I’m told you can buy a rifle, ammo, and have a $1.75 draft, all while waiting for your turn to sing karaoke.

I heard it through the grapevine that Kroger has a new video rental kiosk with cheap,$1ish per night pricing.

Some of us had to find new jobs back in the day because the hburg Kroger was getting out of the cheap video rental business… ah well, hooray for cheap entertainment either way. Maybe that means Acme will someday go back to their stove and video roots!

I’m sad that we’ll lose such a “claim to fame,” like having the largest frying pan or something. I always enjoy explaining the stove and video concept to my out of town friends.

Since they were/are essentially a mom and pop video store, they stayed in business a lot longer than most.

    Woops.

Josh was right about the Kroger rentals, though. Its a DVD vending machine you use with your credit card. A dollar a day.

  5. Bennie’s Beach is a hoot. you HAVE to go there. I live in Broadway and my husband is from here…so he took me there and it was great. Just too funny. There was a huge story in the Washington Post about it some years back. They have the article up on the wall here along with the sign in the window that says….”I don’t call 911″ with a picture of a big glock in the background! And the guns are hanging on the ceiling by wires!! Benny’s Beach is a must see.
