The City of Harrisonburg is offering businesses a matching grant for tree planting within the City. This grant is offered in partnership with the Shenandoah Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) and the Friends of Blacks Run Greenway (FBRG). Grant funds cover half the expenses associated with purchase of new trees and mulch, and all of the planting labor. Recipients will be required to provide matching funds towards the purchase of new trees and mulch, and will be
responsible for watering and maintenance needs. Trees will not be planted where there are conflicts with utilities or safety concerns. To apply for the grant, e-mail Jared Stoltzfus at Jareds@harrisonburgva.gov and include your business name, business location, name of property owner, and a brief description of where you’d like to locate the tree. Questions can also be directed via e-mail, or call Jared at (540)437-1258.

If you only eat out once in a while (or even if you eat out all the time), next Tuesday-Thursday, August 12-14 is THE week to do it. Downtown restaurants are offering dinner at great prices as part of “Taste of Downtown,” sponsored Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance. Major deals on super good eats! Visit http://www.downtownharrisonburg.org for menus and prices.

From Sam Nickels:
“We, at NewBridges and Success by 6 Academy for Families, would like to extend the invitation to everyone in the Harrisonburg Community to come to our Open House. The Open House will be held Thursday, September 18th from 4 pm to 7 pm at the NewBridges office on 70 South High Street, underneath Community Mennonite Church.
Some of the families we serve will be visiting, as well as local professionals and colleagues who work with immigrant families and/or families with small children.
Join us for a few minutes, a snack and good conversation, anytime between 4 and 7 pm. It will be a wonderful opportunity to exchange information:
● to chat in a relaxed atmosphere and bring each other up to date regarding the programs and services our organizations offer;
● to talk about different ways in which we can collaborate, and/or continue working together for our newest neighbors and the wellbeing of our community.
The only formal task on the agenda is to gather information to produce a 2008-9 “Directorio Hispano” (Directory of Local/Regional Services and Businesses, intended for the Spanish-speaking community). Please complete and bring or send us the attached form so we have your information accurately updated.
If you are unable to join us please consider asking another representative of your agency to attend.
Please RSVP by Monday, September 15 at newbridges@verizon.net. Thank you!”
