Obenshain challenger in the 26th?
posted by Brent FinneganA few weeks ago there was news of several possible challengers for Goodlatte in the 6th Congressional District.
Last week RockDem posted about several potential Democratic party nominees in different local races, including Luray resident Maxine Roles. Today The New Dominion has an announcement piece on Roles. She hopes to challenge Mark Obenshain in the 26th state senatorial district this fall. She has an Act Blue donation page, but no campaign website yet. At least none I could find. Her campaign website is also up.
Most interesting to me is what she says about fear-driven politics (a topic of ongoing discussion on this blog)
For too many years, our politicians have used scare tactics to build political campaigns and frighten citizens into voting for them. We have created wars against societal problems rather than looking for ways to heal social ailments and prevent the ills on the front end.
Sure, it’s all politics, and that’s what speeches and news releases are for, but topics like gangs, illegal immigration, and the Gemeinschaft are all local issues that can (and have been) be used to instill fear in voters and win elections.
Regardless, any challenger for Obenshain or Goodlatte will have a long, uphill battle ahead of them.

I like that her message is one of inclusion, not exclusion.

Is Maxine throwing a wrench in Mark’s plan to be the next Republican candidate for Attorney General of Virginia?
It appears that the incumbent, Mark Obenshain, has been submitting legislation for the past four years that would bolster his chances of a bid for Attorney General, rather than legislation that truly focuses on the rural district he represents. However, in recent news articles, Obenshain has been elusive about whether or not he will run for AG in 2009, just one year into the next Senate term.
Can the voters trust Mark Obenshain to actually represent them vigorously as a Senator, or is he just using this seat to campaign for higher office?

I checked out Maxine Roles’ website, her message is nice, but I’d like to see what kinds of ideas and plans she has to back up her message, because right now it strikes me a slightly flimsy.
Of course, she hasn’t really had the time to round out her positions with substantial plans and ideas, so I guess I’ll have to play “wait and see”.
