May is National Bike Month

David Troyer -- May 15th, 2007

While there is some debate as to today being “National Don’t Buy Gas Day”, May is National Bike Month, with this week being Bike-to-work Week and, as Thanh mentioned, Friday being Bike-to-work Day. The League of American Bicyclists has also assembled a guide to 50 ways (PDF) to celebrate National Bike Month.

Here in Harrisonburg, you can celebrate via a few additional opportunities:

Wednesday May 16th, the Shenandoah Valley Bike Club is coordinating a Ride of Silence. The Ride of Silence is a “silent slow-paced ride (max. 12 mph) in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways.” The 12 mile ride is leaving from Harrisonburg High School on Garbers Church Rd. Meet at 6:45 p.m. to leave by 7:00.

Saturday May 19th is the latest rendition of the Harrisonburg Alley Cat, the theme is “Cops and Robbers”. An alleycat is a themed scavenger hunt on bicycle with fun and prizes! Bring a smiling face, bike, $2 and a pen (helmets, lights and costumes highly encouraged). Meet at Court Square at 8:00 p.m.

  1. Thanh says:

How often does Alley Cat happen? And how do I find out when it will happen again? (Unfortunately I can’t make it this weekend.) Thanks!

  2. David Troyer says:

Ideally once a month. Realistically, once every couple of months. Send an email to hburgalleycat {at} gmail {dot} com to get on the email list.
