immigration discussion continues…

Brent Finnegan -- May 21st, 2007

While the Senate debates the White House’s immigration deal with Congress in DC, local residents will have another opportunity to discuss immigration issues.

This Thursday (May 24th) at 7:00 WVPT is hosting a forum on immigration, open to the public (full disclosure: I work at WVPT). Dr. Laura Zarrugh (JMU prof, Hispanic Services Council member), Sam Nickels (New Bridges Immigrant Resource Center), Amy Lilly (ESL teacher), Jim Patrick (ODBA blogger, Shen. Co. BoS member), and John Vinson (Americans for Immigration Control) and possibly others will be discussing the local, national, and international issues surrounding the debate. Chris Graham of The New Dominion and Virginia Viewpoints will moderate.

The discussion will also include short screenings from Letters from the Other Side.

If you were at the MRL discussion March 6, or at the Ramada Inn March 30, you know that this is part of an ongoing issue that’s not going away anytime soon.

finnegan, will thursday’s discussion be wandering the vast landscape of immigration and related topics or will the discussion be focused on a specific aspect of the issue?

  2. finnegan says:

Well, I’m not in charge of the meeting, but some of the issues up for discussion are: the impact of immigration on the local and state economy, border-control issues, the guest-worker program, and amnesty.

There was a slight change in the panel. See post.
