Rasoul talks health care

Brent Finnegan -- May 22nd, 2007

As reported on TND yesterday, potential Goodlatte challenger, Sam Rasoul, was at the Daily Grind on Court Square yesterday evening. There, he discussed health care reform with a handful of people.

Rasoul is critical of the current US model, and of the rising cost of health care. He stated that there are many ideas for solving the healthcare crisis in America, including universal healthcare, various public-private partnerships, heavy government subsidizing, etc, but stopped short of promoting one specific overarching solution.

He has pledged half of his salary as Congressman to start up two organizations; “one that assists in making healthcare accessible and more affordable to our forgotten working and middle classes, and one dedicated to small business development.” Reminds me a little bit of a campaign pledge of a certain Clerk of Court candidate.

Rasoul admitted that his ideas come off as idealistic, and added that they need to be in order to achieve progress.

I enjoyed my brief chat with Sam on Monday evening. His idealism will turn more pragmatic as the campaign continues. He indicated that he’s in the listening stage and formulating actual policy will occur as his listening tour continues. I’m very happy that he’s challenging the debate and hopefully giving us an alternative to Mr. Goodlatte’s political Theocracy.
