Richmond – Regulators have proposed increasing the acceptable amount of fecal bacteria in Virginia’s streams, rivers and lakes. The State Water Control Board will make a final decision next year. Department of Environmental Quality staff members said it’s almost impossible to meet the current bacteria standard in many waterways. The relaxed limits would continue to protect the public, DEQ staff said.

When the plant opened a lot of people predicted great things, instead we are getting to see concentrated results of what has always been going into the river. It just used to come in at different points and from different sources.

“One project, the SIL Clean Water Modular Reclamation Reuse System (MRRS) nearTimberville, has had difficulty meeting its annual nutrient reduction requirements since the performance period began in 2001. DEQ determined that the facility exceeded its annual nutrient load allowances in the years 2001-2004 and monetary assessments for repayment of a portion of the grant due to non-performance were ordered. SIL failed to pay these assessments, so they have been referred to the Office of the Attorney General for collection. In August 2003, SIL was
ordered to submit a Corrective Action Plan to ensure future compliance with the performance requirements of the WQIF agreement. It is now evident that the Plan has not achieved the
desired results, as the facility will exceed their annual nutrient load allowances in 2005 as well. The pending collections referred to the Office of the Attorney General total $236,647 and the
potential 2005 assessment may be $45,500 or more.”
