Eyes Wide Open

Brent Finnegan -- May 29th, 2007

Did anyone make it to one of the Eyes Wide Open exhibits in town this past weekend? Dozens of pairs of boots and shoes were on display at several locations, representing the number of US soldiers from Virginia killed thus far in Iraq (the shoes represent the Iraqi civilians). The exhibit was presented at the South 42 Wal-Mart parking lot, the lawn of Trinity Presbyterian Church, and Court Square.

The DNR reported 94 pairs of boots, TV3 reported 97, so I’m not sure the exact number. At any rate, that number recently increased by one.

I was there Sunday at Trinity Presbyterian Church.
Reflections on that day, on my children, and my own childhood during the vietnam War are here:

I met one of the workers that day. She was a very nice Quaker whose views were entirely rational in my book. I love that there are people in this world who are willing to say (without being constantly accused of idealism) that violence is no longer an option. Kudos!

At press time (the Saturday magazine is actually printed on Wednesday), 94 soldiers from Va. had been killed, so the number must have gone up by the weekend.

Someone named Seth B took a bunch of photos of the Harrisonburg displays and put them in a slideshow on Flickr.
