show me the money

posted by Brent Finnegan

The other day, Waldo pointed out on his blog that VPAP now has a feature where you can tell where political campaign contributions come from, geographically speaking. Interestingly, it looks like the largest contributions by locality for Obenshain came from Harrisonburg and Rockingham, while the largest contributions for Lohr by locality came from Richmond.

A moment to pay lip service to the idea that one should not pull out a single fact and think it tells more of a story than it really does …

Ok, I feel virtuous about having said that. But you can also sort by industry, and find Hanger getting $37K out of his total $144K from alcohol concerns. What’s up with that?

Isn’t Coors in Hanger’s district?

Senator Hanger has worked hard to assist the developing local vinyard and wine industry. This provides an alternative use for ag land which preserves green space and is a great plus for the local economy.

Coors is indeed in the district.

Hope this helps.

Until recently, there was no vineyard (that I’m aware of) in Rockingham County. Now there is one.

I think there is one out in the Linville area. The name escapes me right now. Although, it might not be a vineyard, just the winery.

There’s a state sign for a vineyard off of Route 11 north in Lacey Spring. I’ll drive by on the way to the dump and get the name this afternoon.

You might be thinking of Landwirt Vineyards. I believe they no longer are making wines, but continue to grow grapes.

Off-topic but…

Landwirt used to host a wine festival. I went out there twice - the first time I knew I was getting close by the number of cars that were in ditches by the side of the road; the second time I was turned away - the crowd had gotten too rowdy and the event was shut down early!
