Petraeus, local troops & yard signs

Brent Finnegan -- September 12th, 2007

In the midst of the media whirlwind over “the Petraeus report,” TV3 is reporting that National Guard troops from Harrisonburg are shipping out from Camp Shelby, Mississippi for Iraq today.

While driving on 42 from H’burg to Broadway two days ago, I couldn’t help but notice the dozen-or-so yard signs littering the median and side of the road, proclaiming “DEFEND FREEDOM: NATIONAL GUARD.” One would assume the purpose of these signs is recruitment of new troops. I find it ironic (or telling) that someone put them up around the same time that our local Guard troops are leaving for Iraq.

The 30,000 that will be “drawn” down include those that are coming home from a required 15 month stay and when Wendy gets back, I hope the military lets them stay for a while before demanding them back into action. Full service rotation for all members…

I realize that this is off topic, to an extent. But has anyone noticed all of the yard signs for national guard, tattoo and motorcycle, and of course clerk of court?

It already looks like litter, and more are yet to come. I for one do not believe that yard signs are a necessary evil. From day one I decided not to put out yard signs for my campaign due to the volume of candiates … I knew it would be come offensive while being ultimately ineffective.

I am proud to say that the only signs you’ll see for me are hooked on my trailer and travel here, there and everywhere.
Kinda like a moving billboard. And I can assure you my signs will be removed the day after the election rather than linger in vacant lots throughout the community.

Being in a B-2 zone, there are to be NO “yard signs”, banners, sidewalk signs…unless they are of military in nature. The “open” flag we fly in actually against regs but so would be the signs in the Exxon lot, AAMCO lot, the sign,(sometimes in Spanish so I’m not sure what they are advertising) that is in the island part of the Phase 2 lot on Res. Street and so on and so forth. I hate seeing yard sale signs and election signs as well left up for weeks afterwards.

Thank GOD that the American Flag cannot be taken down !

if you coming to Broadway in 259 West you can see my American Flag in our deck behind our home. ANd if you turn left off 259 you see my signs for Matt Lord, Chase for Clerk and Mark Obenshain all Republicans. And if you happen to drive behind my big dodge truck you will read “Say no to Hate Crimes Bill…Save your right of Freedom of Speech”. I don’t mind to see those signs fo National Guards. Militar service is voluntairy and you go because many reasons, but many times is because these soldiers really love their country. I love this country too and I support this country even when I am not agree 100% what the govertment does. But the reality is that I don’t agree with my wife 100% eaither but I still love her so much and she does not agree with me 100% either but she loves me any way.
I am not afraid to say that i support this war, but i respect those who don’t.
by the way…some people have the right to be political correct, but I have the right not to be because I speek from my big heart and I hope you give the right to be who I want to be as well you guys have to right to be and believe whatever you want to be and believe
Luis Padilla who is proud to live in the greatest country on earth!

    Luis,
I’m so glad to see you respect the opinion of those who disagree with you, THAT is definately democratic. The irony is that the republicans that you support are narrow-minded, borderline racists, who have the EXACT opposite values.

You need to do better research of your candidates if you want a good life in America.

Neal, I’m sorry about dropping your flyers on the ground. I was scared by a dog. My apologizes.

I see they cut the nice tree down in the corner of the U Outpost to put up a sign for a Clerk candidate…but I can’t remember their name.

Benny, for future reference, a pingback is a type of link. It’s how blogs communicate with each other.

To everybody, on the daily whack job blog, Whackette & myron stopped me from posting.
It seems as if Dave Briggman actually runs the blog. For various reasons, I said that briggman & jesse were cyber bullies, they can dish it out , but they can’t take it.
So jesse calls up Myron’s wife, crying, Briggman was also crying. So guess what , they told Myron not to let me post anymore!
Does ANYBODY actually want Myron for COC when he is just a puppet for somebody else?

  16. Benny Neal says:

    King Richard,
Briggman has done all the technical talk for Myron when it came to the commputer changes he is campaigning on. Come to think about it , I believe it was Briggman’s idea or suggestion for the Saturday hours as well…I’m sure Briggman is watching, he can tell us who does what.

If you wish to talk about the Clerk of Court race, may I suggest that you take your conversations to this dicussion page of the Rockingham Democratic Committee’s blog. I stumbled upon it when I was trying to find a list of all the individuals running for the Clerk of Court position. I know not everyone is a democrat, or not republican either, but perhaps this is where the conversation is best suited for now. http://rockdem.blogspot.com/2007/03/continued-thread-on-clerk-of-court.html

Please do respect their blog too, as they had to make this statement: “We have received several email messages regarding a few tasteless comments that were posted in this thread… We would like to maintain legitimate and relevant dialog… Speaking to the candidates’ qualifications or lack thereof is the purpose of this thread. Even criticism can be respectfully done.”

Your wish is my command. Talk Redskins all you want. If you want to raise hell, someone else will have to take over the blog. When the blog has new ownership, I’ll post about it and give you a link if you want.

Well Fred, thank you for your honesty. You make me feel that I can have the right to say what is in my heart even when my words might offend others.
Believe or not, I am not a violent person, but I am not pacifist either. There are times that I might use violence for protection.
I disagree with you brother. The men I support are not narrowed minded. I have sit with them and talked with them. They don’t believe in higher taxes, they don’t believe that more pervasive socialism and centralized government are the most direct paths to social justice. They don’t want the U.S. to look more like Canada and Europe in our education, our health care and our foreign policy.
Fred, I have a great life here already…how about having a great family (a wife and 2 children), a college degree in Sociology from EMU and soon starting my master from Liberty University on Leadership next spring, a church that identified with the religious right, a great community of friends including liberals and even radical lefts, living in a meddle class community where I don’t see trash, don’t hear noises, and no driveways full of parked cars, and where two of my neighbors hold Ph. D’s and professors in a university, owner of a brand new house, and two cars in my garage included my infamous big truck dodge(if you know what I mind) full with all kind of bomber stickers expressing my opinion.
Some people criticized last year (even in this blog) during my ordeal with Cargill stating that what I was looking was the American Dream. I have and live the American Dream everyday. I went from a hourly employee to a salary position with full benefits (including a full health care coverage for family) after college.
Yes, I want to become an American citizen for the only reason that I want to have the right to vote (only American citizens have that right) and vote for my leaders, for those people to lead this country, again, the greatest country on earth!
This is where I want to live and die. And when I die, I want my body to rest here as well.
