WMRA’s Civic Soapbox: Search for stories

posted by Thanh

I got this in my email today about WMRA’s search for community members to tell a story on Civic Soapbox. I think its a great opportunity for us all to tell our stories.

Help!
Dear WMRA member and listener,
I’ve had the pleasure and privilege working on the Civic Soapbox with dozens of listeners for well over a year. It has been among the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had in public radio.
WMRA created Civic Soapbox on the theory that listeners also have things to say. This proved true until quite recently when the number of essay submissions has dropped dramatically. If the idea of listeners airing their thoughts on WMRA has run its course, we’ll be forced to discontinue Civic Soapbox because of apparent lack of interest.
Personally, I would hate to see this happen. To me, Civic Soapbox is at the heart of public radio’s mission — which, as I see it, is to stimulate civil, civic discourse. So, this is in effect a direct plea to you to keep this series going with your own submission.
Please, write down about 3 minutes worth of words (usually around 650 words) on any subject about which you are passionate, and e-mail it to wmra@jmu.edu.
It would be a great pleasure to work with you.
Martha Woodroof
WMRA Reporter

I do have a question though. And it may have already been discussed in a previous hburgnews post, but during what program does Civic Soapbox generally air? I know I’ve heard it before, I just don’t know when.

No way has this idea run its course! Civic Soapbox is one of my favorite segments, since it relates so much to the idea of “What’s your OrangeBand?”

I suggest sending a solicitation for entries out to the nonprofits via the Community Resources Center (http://www.hrcrc.org/), thus giving people working on many local issues via local nonprofits a chance to make submissions.

“Civic Soapbox” airs on Fridays - in the mornings during Morning Edition and in the afternoon during All Things Considered. Past submissions are archived at http://www.wmra.org. (Scroll to the bottom of the homepage or click on “Communique”.)

I like the civic soapbox feature. I’ve heard it quite a few times, but until I just read Tina’s comment, I didn’t know when it aired. I hope it continues.
