Disc Golf Action in the ‘burg

Benjamin -- January 24th, 2008

The 30 year old sport that has been rapidly gaining popularity around the country is starting to take on a more structured organization locally. Since the Westover Disc Golf Course was installed several years ago, the number of players in the area has increased steadily, even to the point where a second course at Smithland Park is in currently under consideration.

In most current news, the annual Ice Bowl charity tournament is being held February 2nd, with sign-ups at 11am and tee-off at 12:30pm. Entry is $20 and a non-perishable food item with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank and Our Community Place benefiting from the proceeds. For more information, contact Johnny Griffin at johnny2trees@gmail.com.

In addition to the Ice Bowl, the Harrisonburg Disc Golf Community 2008 Bag Tag Challenge will begin. This is an attempt to organize local disc golfers to meet and challenge each other through friendly competition. All the information can be found at the new Disc Golf Blog.

I’ve been playing for about a year now and it’s a great exscuse to get out and do something fun outside. Let me tell you, the Westover course has some pretty difficult holes, can’t wait for the Ice Bowl!

Yesterday’s Ice Bowl was awesome! It continues to be a fun way to help support charities year after year.

In case anyone was interested we launched the 2008 Bag Tag Challenge yesterday. So far there are 25 players. Tags are now available at Midtowne Market and you can sign up anytime throughout the year.

As a side note – everyone’s favorite blogger, Finnegan, drew number 6. SO…If you want a shot to compete against a local icon you can get your own tag at Midtowne Market.

    Dang.

I told Ben to pick a high number. I expect to be number 25 within a month.

  4. John Marr says:

    Brent,

Actually I’m pretty confident that I’ll be 25 by the end of the month. Your gonna have to play me for it.

  5. Kai says:

This sounds like a fun idea, except for one thing: all those trees over at Westover. Wouldn’t it be easier to see the goals and throw the frisbee without them? ;)

  6. John Marr says:

Can’t we all just get along? ;)

  7. finnegan says:

Update: after six of us got together at Westover today, I’m number 26. I’ve exceeded even my lowest expectations.

  8. johnmarr says:

    Brent,

Don’t be so hard on yourself. You’re actually 24 not 26.

    John

  9. finnegan says:

    Yeah. I mean 24.

    Thanks.

    ;)
