EVDO in the Valley?

posted by finnegan

I saw a Twitter about this a few hours ago, and just saw Briggman’s post on republitarian.com — apparently Verizon’s Evolution-Data (EVDO) high-speed, third generation wireless broadband network now includes Harrisonburg, or at least parts of the area.

From a Verizon press release earlier this month:

The network expansion is part of an aggressive multi-billion dollar network investment each year to stay ahead of the growing demand for Verizon Wireless’ voice and data services. The company spent $300 million to enhance services and coverage throughout Washington, Baltimore and Virginia in 2007, bringing the network investment in the region to more than $1.8 billion since 2000.

I was surprised and delighted to realize this afternoon that I was on an EVDO network in Harrisonburg. I was in Fredericksburg for much of the day (where I was on the EVDO network), and I thought my blackberry was acting up when I returned to Harrisonburg and was still on EVDO. It sure makes mobile web browsing snappy!!

It is about time, I have seen EVDO in much smaller towns than Harrisonburg (Boone, NC, anyone?)

This will make it very tempting to buy an internet package.

[...] Inspired by Verizon Wireless’s recent expansion of their EVDO network, I spent some time this past weekend building a mobile search platform. [...]
