Hundreds of people in Harrisonburg rolled up their sleeves and hit the streets for the 11th Annual Blacks Run and Downtown Clean Up Day Saturday.
This year about 550 people participated, according to city stream health coordinator Jared Stoltzfus. That’s about 100 more people than last year.
“It’s getting bigger and better every year,” Stoltzfus said.

I was with Amanda’s team and we made the stream by the Wendy’s a great place for the ducks hanging out down there to swim around. Awesome day for the cleanup and for the country bands playing in the lawn area.
I’m looking forward to hearing what the numbers are this year after everything is weighed in.
Following up on my previous post I’m interested to hear what kinds of random, knarly, or out right disgusting things people found while participating in Clean Up Day. These are some of the reports I have received passively so far (I didn’t think to ask people at the event): – human feces (apparently there was TP near by, and I can’t help but think “wtf?!”)- $100 bill – $50 bill – $10 bill (all of which were donated to Clean Up Day next year, Thanks!) – shopping cart – plastic jug with antifreeze in it (it was given to the City’s Sanitation Superintendent for proper disposal) – about 100 car tires – a computer monitor – …
Although interesting, it does disappoint me, and I’m sure it disappoints many of you too, that these things ended up on the street and in the stream in the first place. Some of our neighbors really need to do better.
What did YOU find?
While strolling through the park Saturday, I saw the pile of stuff that had been dragged out of the stream. Among the garbage was a mattress. Ugh!

Final stats for the 2008 Clean Up Day on http://www.cleanstream.org. Over 500 volunteers participated, over 4000 lbs (that’s over 2 tons) of trash picked up from Blacks Run and City streets, and over 600 native trees and shrubs planted along Blacks Run!
Next year’s Blacks Run/ Downtown Clean Up Day is scheduled for Saturday April 11, 2009
