HBurg Torpedo Factory?
posted by KaiMuch is happening with the arts downtown, with MACRoCk, the Museum and Gallery Walk, and First Fridays all gaining steam this spring. Next, a three-session facilitated dialogue begins about the next phases of turning the Ruddle Building into an arts center in downtown - that’s the building with the Old Dominion Coffee Company. The sessions start this Saturday, and RSVP is required. Hburgnews readers interested in downtown revitalizations are welcome to share ideas here or even attend.
Full disclosure: Kai is the Executive Director of the Arts Council of the Valley.

Heh, I had never heard of the Torpedo Factory before so I didn’t get the headline right away…cool, though.

i think you might have just set yourself up for a ‘local blogger becomes aware of world outside of the burg’ headline on that other blog.

Thanks for finding the link, Gx. In the arts community, the Torpedo Factory is pretty well known, but I shouldn’t have assumed most people knew the reference - I know I wasn’t always aware of it! Field trip, anyone?

Oh, and thanks to Karl for the interest - look for an interview about this discussion series on WSVA at some point!

I will be very curious to see what happens to the Ruddle building; the more art we can get downtown, the better.
The Second Street Gallery in Charlottesville is a pretty fantastic downtown arts center. They finished development few years ago- I think it has performing arts space as well as gallery space, and space that can be rented out for events. Their website is http://www.secondstreetgallery.org/.

Thanks for the link, H. Charlottesville has a lot to offer in terms of examples and synergy for arts-related activites.

You might also want to look at the Jefferson Center and Center in the Square in Roanoke — two other innovative (although much much bigger) repurposings of underutilized buildings.
