Special Olympics torch visits the area
posted by Evan DysonThursday morning at 8 a.m. area law enforcement took up the torch, literally, and ran through the county with sweat and determination.
This weekend the state’s Special Olympics will be held in Richmond and the runners carrying “The Flame of Hope” are winding their way to the capital city for the occasion. Yesterday, the torch arrived in New Market and was run by Rockingham County and Harrisonburg officers.
This morning, police from Harrisonburg, Rockingham County and the Virginia State police, along with three Special Olympic contestants, led the torch from downtown Harrisonburg to Verona, a distance of 22 miles.
At 11:30 a.m. the torch was passed to Staunton police officers, who will continue the route to Richmond.

i got this email from the pr director for special olympics:
Now that you’re a fan, we wanted to let you know (if you don’t already!) about the launch of the new Summer Games “Volunteer to Cheer” Web site, http://www.volunteer2cheer.com! We are looking for 3,000 “fan-atics” to fill the stands at this year’s Summer Games, June 6-7 in Richmond, because it’s truly not as special without the fans. Please visit the Web site today, forward it to your friends, and help us reach our goal of 3,000 community fan-atics at Summer Games this weekend!
Best,
Holly Claytor

don’t think i’m going to be able to make it, but if anyone is looking for a really cool way to spend your weekend, i’d definitely reccomend it.
