CNN Projects Virginia for Obama
Renee -- October 15th, 2008
In what CNN ”Situation Room” anchor Wolf Blitzer is calling “stunning news”, the CNN Election Tracker map just moved the traditionally-Republican state of Virginia out of “toss-up” status into the “leaning Obama” category.
“Virginia hasn’t gone Democratic in 44 years,” said Alan Silverleib, CNN senior political researcher. “But a number of polls — including our own — now show Obama up double digits there. And, as the map shows, if Obama holds that lead, it may be enough to put him into the White House.”
“Conversely, McCain really can’t afford to lose Virginia’s 13 electoral votes. That state is a key part of the Republican electoral coalition,” Silverleib added.

Update: If you look at the numbers on the CNN map, you’ll notice that even if McCain wins every state that is still considered a “toss-up”, he will not win the election. He has to regain the lead in a state that is currently leaning Obama, and win all of the toss-up states, in order to win the presidency. Otherwise, Obama will be our next president. The state of Virginia is considered a huge factor in who is going to win this election.

Woohoo!!!
Two and a half weeks seems a little early to call a state. Can’t we be a swing state, at least for a little longer?
Yeah, it is early. They’ve been doing projections on their map the entire election – they are just saying “leaning Obama” so it’s not quite called yet :)

Though I just searched and didn’t find anything but the one mentioned in the article, I want to see these polls because as far as I can tell, the change is based on just this one. Give me a break.
what a cool distinction it will be if va is the only state in the union to have voted for the first african american governor and the first african american president.

JG,
I actually saw that site. I meant I couldn’t find any others where Obama was up by double digits. Thank you, though.
