I disagree with these projections. We only have half in and the council races are really, really close. Wiens isn’t even in top three. The Shafer prediction is probably right, though.

I wonder when absentee ballots will be added. They could definitely make the difference in some of the local races.
With council, all three Dems are now in the lead.

As of 2006, whoever finished first in the most recent city council race became mayor.

It’s late, but I am very sure that at one point whoever received the most votes in the council race became mayor. Maybe that was just a tradition followed by the council. I’m sure someone can straighten me out.
Congrats to the winners. I have to admit that I am extremely dissapointed that Charlie didn’t retain a seat. It’s a huge loss to the community and I hope he runs again.
Hey folks – rough morning, but congratulations to all of the new council members. Council elects its own mayor though not necessarily the highest vote getter. Certainly, the highest vote getter deserves and gets added consideration. In my two experiences with electing the mayor, it was always a fairly collegial decision. Not everybody wants the job. Whomever gets the job needs much free time and scheduling flexibility because of the ceremonial demands.

Charlie, thank you for your service to the city. You always impressed us by asking good questions, avoiding foregone conclusions, and listening to everyone who had something to say.
I hope this is not the end of your political career, because I would like to vote for you again in the future.
I’m sorry about Charlie too. He’s a good guy with the best interest of the city at heart. With that said, Harrisonburg voters were fortunate to have their choice of so many qualified and “good” candidates. Ultimately the voters were the winners in an election like this.
Charlie, I’m deeply grateful for your service to the city. I’ve been impressed with the way you always take time to respond to citizens’ concerns (the trees on Court Square, to name one example). Incoming council members would do well to follow your example of responsiveness.
There were a bunch of people that were not happy with the sale of the high school to JMU. I think that was Mr. Chenaults demise. Locals have long memories and hard feelings about that sale. The council, Mr. Chneault included, did not care what the public said, the decision was made prior to the pubic hearing.
It is sad to drive past that site now. Memorial Stadum is gone and a parking lot now exists where the tennis courts once stood. JMU wanted. JMU got. Just like the hospital. The new one is smaller (less beds) and in an awful place, but JMU wanted and got the existing site.
I think the people have spoken and put 3 new people in who appear to care about our city and the desires of the people.

@Peppa: Check out the parking lot that replaced the tennis courts. It sucks that it’s a parking lot, but I approve of the landscaping that just got put up there.
Myers, I went by today. Sorry to say I was not impressed. All I saw were a few trees along the road. Unless I missed something it’s pretty weak. As a burger those courts were part of growing. I would still see people using them. I find it sad. Then when you look towards the missing ball fields, even more sad.
A little late, but in this case want to add my two cents. I think Charlie is a real class act. He listens and responds in an attentive, respectful, thoughtful manner- in this forum as well as in others. I’m with Jeremy, I’d love to have the opportunity to vote for him again in the future too.
