what to do with christmas trees

Now that Christmas is over, many of you with Christmas trees might be wondering what options you have for disposing of them.
Harrisonburg residents who receive trash service from the City may put the trees curbside for pick up. The Public Works Department will be picking up the majority of trees left curbside throughout the week of January 5-9. After that week, trees will be picked up curbside with regular Wednesday yard debris pick up. Call Harrisonburg Public Works at 434-5928 for more information.
If you are a Harrisonburg resident in an apartment complex or development that does not receive City trash service, please check with your waste hauler (i.e. Waste Management, Green Earth, etc) or call your property manager or homeowners association for assistance.
Rockingham County residents may take their trees to one of six collection locations in the County until January 31, 2009. The County is also collecting Christmas cards and cardboard boxes. Call Rockingham County Public Works at 564-3000 for more information.
I just realized that City residents can take their trees to the County landfill too, but there may be a fee, so please call first.
If you have access to a chipper, chipped Christmas trees make very great landscaping material and is a great ingredient in compost!
Please note, that if you do take it to the landfill, it will cost you $17.00, as that is now their MINIMUM charge to drop anything into the landfill. Metal recycling is still free, but they won’t pay you.
