One of Harrisonburg’s five K-9 Police units has won the  “2008 Case of  the Year  Award”  in the Patrol Utility category from  the  Virginia  Police  Canine  Association. Master Police Officer Shawn Morris and his canine partner Nikki received the award for tracking a scent that led to discovery of evidence that helped solve a robbery in May 2008.

Nikki is a Belgian Malinois brought to Virginia from Holland in 2003. She works narcotics cases as well as patrol utility. Officer Morris joined the Harrisonburg Police Department in 2001, started working with the K-9 unit in 2004, and has worked with Nikki since.

Morris and Nikki are an active team, performing 105 calls for assistance, 904 calls for service, and 70 drug searches in buildings and vehicles in 2007 – the most in the HPD K9 unit.
