Got Spanish? Or Urdu? Or…

DebSF -- February 11th, 2009

The Harrisonburg City Public Schools system is looking for people to serve as volunteer interpreters on Parent-Teacher Conference Days. This job consists in oral interpretation for teachers and parents in an informal meeting. Interpreters can choose to help any City School (Elementary, Middle and High). If you know of students (or others, I presume) who are fluent in other languages in addition to English, please pass this information on to them. We are especially looking for Spanish speakers. This is a great opportunity for those who need to do some hours of community service as part of their studies, as well as to put in practice language skills. More after the jump:

We are planning to offer a training/orientation on:

Tuesday, March 3, 2009
3:30-5:00 pm
Harrisonburg High School Library

Parent-Teacher Conference Day:
Thursday, March 12, 2009
All City Schools

Interested students, please contact:
Yolanda Blake
433-2651 or 810-5605

All kinds of good stuff comes out of this kind of volunteer work.

Opportunities like this make me wish I knew another lanaguge other than English well enough to help out. I should do something about that; maybe next time!

I hope ythe schools get the volunteer help you need. Thanks for posting this.

  2. Tajjie says:

I speak Urdu, but I work full-time so it would be hard for me to volunteer during the day. Anything after normal work hours I can help out.

  3. Renee says:

Tajjie – make sure you get in touch with one of the contacts in the blog post with your availability in case the people in charge of that program aren’t checking for comments here.

  4. Tajjie says:

    Thanks Renee!
