VDOT Public Meeting

Thanh -- March 11th, 2009

Tomorrow, March 12, VDOT’s Staunton District – which includes Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren, and Clarke  Counties – will be holding a Public Meeting to “collect public input on a comprehensive plan to address long-term funding reductions.” The meeting will be held at the Augusta Government Center in Verona, VA beginning at 6pm.

During these meetings, VDOT will provide a brief presentation regarding the proposed changes that will impact drivers in each area including planned reductions to:

  • Rest areas
  • Safety Service Patrols
  • Mowing/roadside maintenance
  • Ferry services
  • VDOT residency offices

The DNR reported that there is a $2.6 billion shortfall in VDOT’s statewide budget. In our region, the Luray office, which serves Page County, is slated to close, as is the Vernoa Office which serves Augusta County. and Edinburg’s office, which serves Shenandoah County, will experience some changes. It is planned for the Harrisonburg Residency to manage VDOT affairs in Harrisonburg, Augusta, and Page Counties. Additionally, rest areas on I-81 are also slated to close.

There have been several opinions posted in the DNR regarding the budget shortfalls and proposed reductions.
