Local shooting case closer to resolution after recent arrest.

David Miller -- March 13th, 2009

Yesterday, March 12th, 2009 the Harrisonburg Police Department arrested a suspect in the South Ave shooting that occurred August 17th, 2007. While the victim of the shooting was eventually released from UVA Medical Center little progress regarding the case has been made public until today.

Although not referencing their reasons, the HPD states that the shooting appears to have been gang related.   The CHARGE Gang Task Force alleges that the suspect was a member of the “Dump Squad Bloods” gang out of Newport News.

Ronald LaShawn Brown, 21, of Newport News was arrested and charged with among other things participating in criminal gang activity, the use of a firearm in commission of a felony, malicious wounding and intent to distribute a schedule I or II drug.

Working with both the special CHARGE Gang Task Force and the Newport News Police Department the Harrisonburg-Rockingham County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office has brought the charges against Brown.  The department has not publicly announced further details on the case.

    Further details:
The HPD confirms that the identity of Mr. Brown was garnered from the investigation immediately following the shooting in 2007. Mr. Brown’s charges are directly linked to the 2 year old case. More info to come.
