Harrisonburg Household Hazardous Waste

Thanh -- April 22nd, 2009

The first Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day for the year in Harrisonburg was held last weekend on April 18th. The good news is that the second HHW Collection Day will be on Saturday May 16, 2009. This event will continue to be held once a month through October on every third Saturday of the month between 8am-12noon at 2055 Berry Rd. Items brought there by residents will be picked up by a hazardous waste management service for proper handling and disposal. So start cleaning out your sheds, garages, basements, or wherever you store your HHWs!

Last year a variety of items were collected including fluorescent bulbs*, oil based paints, acidic household products, alkaline cleaning products, herbicides & pesticides, PCB ballasts, antifreeze, lithium & alkaline batteries, etc. Citizen participation in this event helps keep hazardous chemicals and products out of our drains, storm sewers, landfills, soils and waterways.

For more details on what can be dropped off please visit this site. Please note, this service is available only to City residents.

*The City currently does not accept CFLs at HHW Collection and recommends that residents drop them off at their local Home Depot who collects them.

Also, the web site FileStoreShred.com maintains a list of free paper shredding and electronics recycling events from coast to coast across the U.S.A. and Canada. Scores of organizations sponsor community shredding services that are FREE to the public. For most people, these events are faster and easier than trying to dispose of this stuff at home. Up until now, it was never this easy to find a shred when you needed one AND it costs you nothing!
