Despite federal rulings on this topic, a renegade registrar can still interpret state law to match her own political leanings and personal prejudices, two things that should be kept out of the registration process. Someone in that position should be carrying out the law, not making it up on the fly. Given a choice between this task force and a criminal investigation of the local office, this is probably better in the long run, albeit less satisfying. Well said, Cook.
