Drug Use, State-by-State

DebSF -- August 19th, 2009

The DNR’s recent story on the continuing increase in drug use in the Valley notes that Harrisonburg ranks #1 in the state in terms of the number of investigations, seizures, and undercover purchases of meth. The Department of Health and Human Services recently published a state-by-state analysis of drug use, converted into an interactive map here.   Click the drop-down menu to see each cocaine, marijuana, alcohol or other kinds of drug use (meth is not broken out as an individual category).

Overall, we don’t seem to be much of an outlier.  And Utah aside, there seems to be a strong correlation between frequency of drug use and mountainous topography.  Maybe it’s the word “high”.

One Response to “Drug Use, State-by-State”

  1. The OAS study does find a (reported) increase in “illicit drug” use in Virginia:

Ten States showed significant changes from 2005-2006 to 2006-2007 (at the 5 percent level of significance) in the percentage of all persons aged 12 or older who used an illicit drug in the past month … Arizona, Kentucky, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Virginia, and Wisconsin had increases.

Virginia also had increases in (reported) marijuana use, but overall, we seem to be relatively average in most categories.

It would be fascinating to see a map like this broken down by county.
