Running For Sherry

Brent Finnegan -- November 13th, 2009

There’s an emotionally evocative story in today’s Richmond Times-Dispatch about Sherry Anderson, the jogger who was killed by a drunk driver in a hit and run last January. Sherry’s friend, Sarah Jones, says that Sherry had been planning to run in tomorrow’s Richmond Marathon.

Participation in a marathon was Anderson’s idea, but both women understood, intuitively, that they wouldn’t run until Jones was ready. Jones decided last Christmas that she was ready. She sent Anderson a text message: “It’s time. [2009] is our year to run a marathon. We have to do this before we die.” . . .

As many as 10 of Anderson’s friends from Harrisonburg are expected to run in Richmond tomorrow. They’ll be easily identified. Each will wear a 4-inches-in-diameter button bearing Anderson’s image.

Such a sad story but great to see that Anderson is still an inspiration to her fellow H’burg runners. I am sure she will be there in spirit.

Wow that’s great that they are going for it! It is a great way to honor her memory.

  3. Jamie Smith says:

Run Sarah, Run. You did a great job honoring Sherry!

  4. Bill says:

I was there. My wife was one of the “Sherry runners”- it was a highly emotional and healing effort by all of the women who ran wearing Sherry’s badge. I am so proud of all of them.
