Introducing: the guest bloggers

Brent Finnegan -- November 16th, 2009

This is an open invitation to hburgnews readers who would like to become more active on hburgnews with minimal obligation. If you’re a writer or a local “expert” on something, we invite you to join us a guest blogger for one week (an idea stolen from my favorite blog, Boing Boing).

For several years, I’ve been trying to come up with a realistic approach to make hburgnews a sustainable local news network that the community can participate in, rather than passively read. I don’t have enough time to stay on top of every story, and I seldom do any original reporting. But that doesn’t mean we can’t have original, community-driven content.

A guest blogger doesn’t have to stick to news. You could write about almost anything: gardening, biking, travel, cooking, building things, making art, or something more technical, like economics or science. In other words, share what you know with the rest of us.

One of the only things I’m specifically not interested in is straight up opinion pieces. That’s what the comments are for. But a how-to series might be a good idea for a week. If you want timely suggestions for topics, check the promotional events calendar. You won’t believe the broad range of weeks and months listed there.

If you don’t know how to blog, don’t worry. You can email us, and we can publish your story under your name.

So glad you’re going to get this going! I have always thought guest-bloggers would be a great addition to hburgnews, and the 1-week commitment is something anyone can do :)
