More 3G In The County?

Brent Finnegan -- February 22nd, 2010

at&t mapYou’ve seen the Verizon ads mocking AT&T’s 3G coverage map. AT&T is working to change that image. Last week, AT&T announced a $19 billion investment plan for Virginia (story via WSVA).

The telecom giant announced “the addition of nearly 70 cell sites and the upgrade of more than 200 additional cell sites to 3G.”

While there wasn’t a specific mention of Rockingham County, AT&T has already rolled out 3G coverage in the city, as well as parts of Massanetta Springs, the Massanutten Ski resort, Bridgewater and Hinton.

AT&T’s plans for expansion are contingent upon erecting cell towers. In some cases, those proposals have met with resistance. WSVA reports:

In December, Rockingham County’s Board of Supervisors denied an AT&T application for a new cell tower between Harrisonburg and Linville. The company is also proposing to replace an 80-foot electrical transmission tower with a 99-foot tall telecommunications tower off South East Side Highway in Port Republic.

According to a map generated by AT&T’s competitor, even Verizon’s “enhanced services” coverage is spotty in the western part of the county. Here’s Verizon’s map:

If you live in the county, do you have 3G coverage? Do you want it?

UPDATE: Here’s Sprint’s “mobile broadband network” map (per Ben’s comment below)

  1. Ben says:

I live in Fulks Run and have had 3G coverage through NTelos (Sprint’s network) since December. Verizon’s signal is weak-to-absent at my place. I’d welcome more competition in the area and might even spring for the iPhone if AT&T provided service.

  2. I didn’t know Fulks Run had 3G coverage. Thanks, Ben. I added a Sprint map to the end of the post.

Anyone else in the county have mobile broadband coverage? If not, what area do you live in?

  3. Super-good 3G through Verizon, valley-wide. And just about everywhere nationwide (WV not included). My understanding is that Ntelos provides service to Verizon customers by way of an agreement for Ntelos customers to get service in the Verizon-held regions of the Country. An Ntelos rep told me that.

  4. BUD SKILLMAN says:

BRENT, FROM BEN’S COMMENT…DOES THIS MEAN I HAVE 3G HERE BETWEEN THE TWIN CITIES OF FULKS RUN AND BERGTON? THE ONLY 3G WE HAVE (I THINK) IS CARVED IN THE SNOW I JUST INSTALLED A NEW PHONE CORD TO MY LAPTOP.
