Fitzgerald, Romero Dem Nominees for City Council

Brent Finnegan -- May 11th, 2010

Former Mayor Joe Fitzgerald and local teacher Sal Romero are now the official Democratic Party nominees for City Council. Monday evening, Harrisonburg Democrats held an assembled caucus at the Massanutten Public Library to elect their nominees. Fitzgerald and Romero were the only two to officially announce their intentions to run as Democrats for the two City Council seats up for grabs this November.

Participants signed a “caucus participation form” verifying that each voter is registered in the City of Harrisonburg, believes in the principles of the Democratic Party, and that they do not intend to vote for any candidate opposing the Dem nominees.

On the GOP side, Harrisonburg School Board member Greg Coffman is the only person to officially announce a run for the Republican nomination. A story in today’s DNR reports that former council member (and current planning commissioner) Charlie Chenault is “considering” a run for the other open seat.

  2. Dany Fleming says:

Congrats to Joe and Sal. They’ve both proven themselves as leaders who care about the city and the important issues facing us. Through their civic and community involvement, they’ve also shown they’re willing to do the hard work and the “small things” that really make a difference – they’re “actually in the arena…spending themselves in a worthy cause,” as Teddy Roosevelt said. That’s a good sign for the city.

  3. Lowell Fulk says:

Hey Dany, don’t you know Teddy Roosevelt was a, gasp… Progressive?

  4. Emmy says:

    Best of luck to both!

  5. Dany Fleming says:

Lowell: a Harvard-educated, naturalist and trust-busting business regulator; he wouldn’t last long in today’s Repub party. I don’t think Lincoln nor T. Roosevelt would recognize or support their party now.
