No Dem Challenger for Goodlatte

Brent Finnegan -- May 12th, 2010

In the spring of 2007, Sam Rasoul began his long, ambitious campaign to challenge Republican incumbent Congressman Bob Goodlatte for the sixth district seat in 2008. Now, less than seven months out from the November 2010 election, no challenger has stepped forward from the Democratic Party to challenge Goodlatte.

Although there will be other names on the ballot — an article in today’s Roanoke Times mentions challenges from Libertarian Stuart Bain, and a possible challenge from “Center Party” founder Jeff Vanke — it does not appear that a Democrat will be among them.

“We looked and sought candidates all over the place, but just could not find anybody that’s willing to take on the job,” said 6th Congressional District Democratic Committee Chairwoman Linda Wyatt. “We’ve just not found anybody who wants to step up to the plate right now.”

In fact, Democrats have failed to field a challenger to Goodlatte in fewer than half of his election bids. Steve Musselwhite ran against Goodlatte when Goodlatte first ran in 1992. Jeffrey Grey ran in 1996. Roanoke Mayor David Bowers ran in 1998 and Sam Rasoul ran in 2008. (read more)
