Byrd Joins Coffman In GOP City Council Bid

Brent Finnegan -- May 14th, 2010

There are two seats on City Council up for election this November, currently held by Republican Ted Byrd and Independent Carolyn Frank. In today’s Daily News-Record, Byrd said he is seeking the Republican nomination to keep his seat.

Harrisonburg Republicans are expected to officially nominate their candidates Monday evening.

In early January, Harrisonburg City School Board member Greg Coffman announced his intention to run for the GOP nomination for council.

The Democrats have already selected their nominees; former Mayor Joe Fitzgerald and Sal Romero, director of Second Home.

Frank has previously indicated that she will run for re-election, in addition to also running in the special election for state delegate this June.

And there may be another independent with City Council experience joining Frank on the ballot. Charlie Chenault, who lost his bid for re-election as a Republican in 2008, said he is considering a run as an independent this fall. If Chenault files, that would make for a total of six candidates running for two available seats.

In the absence of a hotly contested up-ballot race — Rep. Bob Goodlatte still has no challenger from the Democratic Party — voter turnout is expected to be low.
