Summer’s End: The Rockingham County Fair in Pictures
Holly Marcus -- August 20th, 2010
Another Rockingham County summer comes to a crescendo in the week-long festivities of a county fair. The fair is a place where the idyllic pageantry of the cattle barn collides with the realities of the midway. Where home-canned pickles are awarded blue ribbons as trash cans fill with empty Coke bottles. Where blacksmiths form iron by hand while hip-hop teenagers innocently pat the source of their next meal. Where a celebration of the past becomes a showcase of the future.
It’s fair week in Rockingham County.

Amazing!
Whoa, someone’s got some photo skills! Inspiring work by Holly…
Love the photos.
Nice description. You can’t know Rockingham County, Virginia if you ain’t been to the fair. It’s a big fat cross-section through everything Rockingham. Like walking into a barn and getting a nostril full of ammonia – overwhelming, eye-opening.
I really like the shots of the Mennonites in the grass and the young cowboy on his cell phone.
NatGeo-esque.
Great shots, Holly!
These are absolutely terrific. *clap*clap*clap*
Beautiful shots, Holly!
Just wondered if I could have a copy of the picture of the Dress the Cow contest – that’s my daughter.
Thanks for all of the positive feedback. We plan to make photo essays a regular feature on hburgnews.
