Award-Winning Parks & Recreation Projects

Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation was honored by the Virginia Recreation and Parks Society this month for two projects:  First Tee® Harrisonburg and the Blacks Run Stream Bank Restoration Project.

Hampton, VA—Two City of Harrisonburg projects were recognized at the 56 th Annual Conference of the Virginia Recreation and Parks Society in mid September. Over 700 delegates from around the state gathered in Hampton, VA for the conference.

Included in the conference agenda was a formal presentation of awards. This state‐wide program honors individuals, agencies and organizations throughout Virginia who have demonstrated excellence in any of several areas during the previous year. Judged by a jury of its peers, Harrisonburg received two of these honors.

The First Tee® Harrisonburg – Rotary Learning Center was awarded “Best New Facility.” The First Tee Learning Center is located adjacent to Heritage Oaks Golf Course off Garber’s Church Road.

Blacks Run Stream Bank Restoration Project was awarded the “Best New Environmental Sustainability Project” for cities with a population size of 25,000 to 50,000. The Stream Bank Restoration project can be seen in Purcell Park off Monument Avenue.
