Lindsay -- September 30th, 2010
In September the Dow Jones News Fund selected Valerie Penton Kibler, Harrisonburg High School teacher and adviser to the HHS Newsstreak, to be the 2010 National High School Journalism Teacher of the Year.
The Newsstreak student-staff produces a print newspaper in addition to the online news site previously featured on hburgnews.com.
From the award announcement:
Richard S. Holden, executive director of the Fund, said, “Valerie’s accomplishments are as impressive as her commitment to her students and lifelong learning. She aims to teach them communication skills that will serve them throughout their lives. ”
In talking about her platform, Mrs. Kibler said she plans to promote diversity. “The first thing that comes to my mind is that every person has a story,” she said. “I try to make it apply to the people on staff, too. We always attract such an eclectic group of people who aren’t friends in the hall necessarily but the things that they do as a staff create a bond.”
Kibler is a Virginia Tech graduate and has been at HHS teaching journalism and advanced English classes since 1998. The announcement goes on to list Ms. Kibler’s numerous accomplishments thus far in the field of promoting high school journalism.
As part of the award, a Harrisonburg High School senior will receive a $1,000 scholarship to study journalism in college.
