HFD Looking For Help Clearing Snow Off Hydrants

Press Release -- December 2nd, 2010

The Harrisonburg Fire Department is announcing a new “Adopt-A-Hydrant” program for Harrisonburg citizens. Last year the numerous snow storms kept firefighters busy shoveling snow for days. Hydrants were buried under the piles of snow and would have taken precious minutes to locate in the event of a fire. Citizens can now help by adopting a hydrant to make sure it is easily accessible throughout the year.

The “Adopt-A-Hydrant” program consists of shoveling the area around the “adopted” hydrant after the plows have cleared the road. A path of approximately three feet should be cleared so that the hydrant is visible and accessible. Clearing the hydrant will benefit the entire neighborhood! Please consider clearing snow from a fire hydrant for your neighbors who may have medical conditions, disabilities, or the elderly who may be unable to do so themselves.

During the summer months it will be important to clear the same three foot path around the adopted hydrant keeping it free of weeds and shrubbery.

Citizens who are interested in participating in this program or would like additional information can contact us at:
