hburgnews birthday get-together

This little blog is about to turn two, and it’s been over a year since the last time hburgnews readers got together for a meet and greet, so we figured; why not have a get together on the two year anniversary of the beginning of the site?
We’ll be gathering for an informal get-together downstairs at [...]

wanted: more Twitterers

We started the Twitter feature in early March. So far, it’s been relatively successful. It’s served as a tip for several blog posts, tracked the fire at Dave’s Recycling, and served as a live blog for a political debate. But what can be done to increase its usefulness?

sharing the blog

As you might imagine, blogging on hburgnews takes up a lot of time. Regular readers have probably noticed an increase in contributions from other writers here recently.

hbblogs.com

You may have noticed a change in the blog headlines in the left sidebar: it’s actually updating properly. That’s because we’ve switched aggregators from hburgblogs.com to hbblogs.com. The old one never worked properly, and Mason Wolf has created a new site for local bloggers that should serve as a hub for local blogs.

what happened

If you were wondering what happened to hburgnews.com last week, the short answer is: I was out of town (out of reach) for about ten days. During that period of time, the site froze up due to some malicious code in the database. Other contributors wanted to post, but couldn’t.
I’ve spent the better part of [...]

Evan Dyson’s blog

In case you didn’t catch it in the aggregator feed; photographer, JMU senior and editor of The Breeze, Evan Dyson, recently launched a behind-the-scenes news blog. To my knowledge, Evan was the first to cover the fire on North Main yesterday — yet another example of how fast blogs can move information.
Evan may be occasionally [...]

minor repairs

Readers who still use Internet Explorer (switch to Mozilla Firefox) tell me the formatting is all screwed up. Please bear with me as I upgrade and fiddle with the code to try to fix these issues.

Twitter experiment

I’ve been aware of Twitter for a while now. Initially, I disregarded it as another waste of time — a place to type mind-numbingly boring narcissistic drivel — along the lines of “what I’m doing” updates on MySpace and Facebook. But something citizen journalism advocate, Jeff Jarvis, recently posted on his blog made me give [...]

What do you want from your local news blog?

So long, 2007

I wanted to make a top 10 best/worst list of the biggest stories and developments in and around Harrisonburg this year, but I decided against it. Instead, here’s the good, the bad, and the ugly, in no particular order…

republitarian archives zapped… again

Before hburgnews, there was another very active blog in the area; republitarian.com. Yesterday, republitarian.com’s creator, Myron Rhodes, wiped out everything he’s posted, along with contributors Dave and Christa’s posts.

clarification

Last week, Dave Briggman posted some confusing and potentially misleading information on republitarian.com about hburgnews. I probably shouldn’t bother, but here it is anyway, in case you were wondering:

enough.

AFP podcast

If you want to hear me bumble on like an idiot, check out the latest Augusta Free Press podcast. I’m the second of three interviewees.
The general idea is that every once in a while, Chris Graham will have me on the podcast to give an “audio digest” of some of the issues and discussions on [...]
