ACLU vs AG over in-state tuition
You may remember when Sen. Emmett Hanger came under fire from Scott Sayre for supposedly voting “to allow illegal immigrants in-state tuition rates at Virginia’s colleges” (Hanger later clarified his position with a bill).

False Papers
In the wake of the ICE arrests, WMRA’s Martha Woodroof interviewed an unauthorized Guatemalan immigrant who used to work at the Cargill plant in Dayton. She asks him about working with false papers.

Pilgrim’s Pride Suit
Pilgrim’s Pride is in the middle of a class action suit by employees who say they are not paid for “time they spent putting on and taking off protective gear.” The suit was reported last week by the AP, the Athens Banner-Herald, and yesterday in the DNR.

The Inverse Relationship Between Immigration and Crime

the ICE arrests
Just to clarify: From what information I was able to gather yesterday and today, there were no arrests made at the Cargill plant in Dayton. However, there were several arrests made in Harrisonburg (the DNR’s DeLea says four, this list shows three local indictees), which were connected to the sale and distribution of identification documents. ICE in Dayton
I’m seeing multiple Twitter reports of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid at the Cargill plant in Dayton.
UPDATE: This doesn’t appear to be a full-scale immigration raid like the 1997 WLR raid. According to reports on TV3 and the DNR, ICE arrested three employees at that work(ed) at the Cargill facility in Dayton on false [...]

Protesting NAFTA
Charlottesville’s Daily Progress has a story about a group from the Valley and Central Virginia that plans to make a trip to Mexico this April, and cross the desert back into the U.S. The group hopes to raise awareness of unfair trade policies that they say help fuel illegal immigration.

Medicaid Fraud Charges
Here’s the financial scandal that didn’t make local headlines:
The Richmond-Times Dispatch reported that Dr. Ilya Zavelsky and his wife were indicted by a federal grand jury “in an alleged $14 million Medicaid fraud.” According to the article, they provided respite care to Russian and Eastern European patients in Harrisonburg as “Renaissance Inc.”
