Obenshain’s LoanMax bill

Senator Mark Obenshain just introduced SB565, a bill that would regulate an unregulated industry: car title lenders.

analysis by precinct

Here’s a brief look at the five city precincts, and 29 in the county:

“voter guide” for State Senate

I’ve already posted the ballots for Tuesday’s election. Reader Annie left a comment suggesting hburgnews publish a voter guide. I’ve decided to profile the two legislative positions; State Senate and House of Delegates. Someone else can profile the other positions and candidates. Here’s what I can tell you about the State Senate candidates:

show me the money

The other day, Waldo pointed out on his blog that VPAP now has a feature where you can tell where political campaign contributions come from, geographically speaking. Interestingly, it looks like the largest contributions by locality for Obenshain came from Harrisonburg and Rockingham, while the largest contributions for Lohr by locality came from Richmond.

Goodlatte, Obenshain, and cockfighting

In Maryland and North Carolina, cockfighting is a felony. In Virginia, cockfighting [for money] is a Class 3 misdemeanor. Congressman Bob Goodlatte voted for a bill that makes it a felony to transport animals across state borders for the purpose of fighting them. Bush recently signed the bill into federal law.

Roles joins fight against Dominion Power

In March I wrote about Dominion Power’s plans to build a 500 kilovolt line through Rappahannock County, and the fight to stop it. So far, Dominion’s opposition hasn’t had much luck. A month ago Rappahannock BoS members, in an effort to build a legal case against Dominion, [...]

Roles responds to Earley’s comments

Yesterday I posted about former AG Mark Earley’s comments on prison reform. Today Mark Obenshain’s opponent, Maxine Roles emailed me this response to Earley’s remarks:

Earley & Gemeinschaft

Today former AG Mark Earley is quoted in the Richmond Times, emphasizing the need for prison reform to “help [prisoners] successfully transition into society.” He’s critical of the “lock em up” crime policies he once helped to create.

Obenshain challenger in the 26th?

A few weeks ago there was news of several possible challengers for Goodlatte in the 6th Congressional District.
Last week RockDem posted about several potential Democratic party nominees in different local races, including Luray resident Maxine Roles. Today The New Dominion has an announcement piece on Roles. She hopes to challenge Mark Obenshain in the 26th [...]
