Council Recap: Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan Approved

On Tuesday night, Harrisonburg City Council voted  to approve the Planning Commission’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan. Council heard the Planning Commision’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan that would give the city guidelines on developing bike and foot traffic infrastructure throughout the city, but postponed a vote pending further review.

In a vote split along party lines, Council carried a motion to continue paying the employee contribution to the Virginia Retirement System for all new employees Tuesday night. A change in the law had given cities and municipalities the option of requiring new employees to pay starting at the beginning of the next fiscal year.

Westboro Baptist threatens Anderson funeral protest: Group also scheduled to be in NE

Nationally renown protesters of the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) have released a statement on their website, indicating that the group may protest at the funeral of Spc. Brian “Bucky” Anderson, to be held Tuesday afternoon in Broadway. Anderson was killed in Afghanistan earlier this month, when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle.

Human error caused this morning’s problems with voting in all five Harrisonburg precincts, according to city election officials. Precinct officers were unable to use city-issued laptops to check the status of incoming voters for more than an hour, but things are now back to normal.
