New locally-owned video store goes high-tech

“The first is usually in New York City or San Francisco, but we have it in Harrisonburg, and I’m proud of that,” says Brad Driver with a smile. Driver, a Bridgewater native and owner of the 9-store “Backstage Video” chain, is talking about his newest endeavor, which is located in the same shopping center [...]

Local kids eat local foods

Today was “Local Foods Day” at Harrisonburg City Schools! A “large portion” of the foods on the lunch menu were purchased from local sources. My sons go to Waterman Elementary and my oldest wanted to try the local meal out. I let them decide if they would like to buy their lunch or pack it [...]

Put some Indian in your cupboard (and your tummy)

So a new Indian restaurant has opened, and so has an Indian/Pakistani grocery store. My wife and I went to both this evening…here’s what we thought:

Blue Nile open

As was pointed out a recent comment, Blue Nile, Harrisonburg’s Ethiopian restaurant has re-opened on Main Street between Elizabeth and Wolfe.
Feel free to post your thoughts and reviews in the comments.

Clementine Open

Clementine Cafe or just Clementine is apparently open.
See for yourself.

favorite restaurants

The cover story on eightyone this month is about the best places to eat. Taste of Thai, Joshua Wilton House, the Little Grill, Calhou — er, Cally’s, Thomas House in Dayton, Earth & Tea, and the Dodger were among the local winners chosen by readers in a survey.
Dave’s won best fries, worst service. I also [...]

So long, 2007

I wanted to make a top 10 best/worst list of the biggest stories and developments in and around Harrisonburg this year, but I decided against it. Instead, here’s the good, the bad, and the ugly, in no particular order…

Martin’s is open

I know that a lot of you try to avoid the big chain stores, and I’m trying to do better myself. But, I’m addicted to coupons and they sent them to me in the mail! So, I made a trip there this afternoon. I have to admit that even for the mass chaos that there [...]

David’s Rant: Transformers

A new column of mine called David’s Rants. Seeing as I have a habit of ranting anyway, I figured that I should do it with a disciplined approach (insert laughter). If you hate my Rants then please feel free to tell me, and I’ll stop. If my Rants spark debate and discussion [...]

vegetarians in the ‘burg

Today I came across this post by a blogger calling herself “*”. It’s an incomplete list of vegetarian options in Harrisonburg. She says she has “more vegetarian lunch ideas to come.” A long time ago, Martin Cizmar had a blog on the DNR called “Vegetablog,” which hasn’t been active since January, 2006.
If there are [...]

bikes & bikes

The big Tour of Virginia bike race went around and around downtown Harrisonburg 35 times Saturday afternoon. The reason I wasn’t there was because I was busy taking the motorcycle training course at BRCC. It was great. Highly recommended for novices such as myself.
If you made it out to the bicycle race, how was it? [...]

Earth & Tea Cafe

I’ve been there a few times since it’s opened — twice for tea and once for lunch.
Since I drink far more tea than coffee, I like to think I know something about it, but one look at the tea menu, and I was lost. Settled on Fruity Russian Caravan (mainly because the name). I probably [...]

Review: Tini’s

If it’s possible to have a bar that’s the polar opposite of Main Street Bar & Grill or The Pub, Tini’s is it.
Tini’s is the cocktail half of the newly-opened Downtown 56 — the restaurant under the apartments at the City Exchange (the old Wetsel Seed Building on Gay Street). Upon entering the bar, you [...]

Massanutten review in the Post

To the delight of the Great Eastern Resort Corporation and the local tourism office, Massanutten Resort got a glowing review in today’s Washington Post. The main focus of the feature is the water park:
But the undisputed headliner of this show is the whacking [?] great water park a mile or so down the main road… [...]
