H'burg Twitter

The Twitter feature will be back just as soon as Twitter fixes it.

interesting

This morning I was having trouble connecting to the Internet in two separate locations (both Comcast). I Twittered, “I’m starting to get the feeling that Comcast is down all over H’burg last night and this morning.” A few hours later, Twitter user “comcastcares - Frank” replied, “DM the phone number on the account and I [...]

New locally-owned video store goes high-tech

“The first is usually in New York City or San Francisco, but we have it in Harrisonburg, and I’m proud of that,” says Brad Driver with a smile. Driver, a Bridgewater native and owner of the 9-store “Backstage Video” chain, is talking about his newest endeavor, which is located in the same shopping center [...]

social network site to launch from H’burg

In 2002, before MySpace and Facebook were household names, Ronnie Rodes had an idea for a social networking site in Houston that was geared more toward families and homeowners than high school or college students. But he didn’t have the resources to execute a social networking site at the time.
Six years later, with the [...]

Dominion announces “smart meters”

Dominion Virginia Power just announced a plan to reduce energy by offering incentives for saving energy, and installing “smart meters” at every customer’s home or business.
Here’s a video that explains how smart meters work.

another IPv6 failure

A reader alerted me to a very familiar-sounding story in the DNR/Page News and Courier today: the IPv6 initiative in Shenandoah has failed.

wanted: more Twitterers

We started the Twitter feature in early March. So far, it’s been relatively successful. It’s served as a tip for several blog posts, tracked the fire at Dave’s Recycling, and served as a live blog for a political debate. But what can be done to increase its usefulness?

EVDO in the Valley?

I saw a Twitter about this a few hours ago, and just saw Briggman’s post on republitarian.com — apparently Verizon’s Evolution-Data (EVDO) high-speed, third generation wireless broadband network now includes Harrisonburg, or at least parts of the area.

Are local NPR stations in trouble?

Ken Stern was ousted as the CEO of NPR last week. Some say his removal was about protecting the local stations, because Stern was leading the way in digital content delivery; offering NPR content on the web, and leaving stations like WMRA with little to offer listeners in terms of unique content.
Tom DuVal, station [...]

SVTC Tech Nite 8.0

Last night was the 8th installment of the Shenandoah Valley Technology Council’s awards gala. The nominees were announced a few weeks ago and the winners were announced last night. There was an interesting mix of young tech entrepreneurs and larger area businesses of all kinds that have been in the valley for years. If you [...]

Twitter experiment

I’ve been aware of Twitter for a while now. Initially, I disregarded it as another waste of time — a place to type mind-numbingly boring narcissistic drivel — along the lines of “what I’m doing” updates on MySpace and Facebook. But something citizen journalism advocate, Jeff Jarvis, recently posted on his blog made me give [...]

WMRA feeds

WMRA/WEMC recently recently upgraded their website to include RSS and podcast feeds for their local and state news stories.
Last week, WHSV announced a newer “easier to navigate” website. In October 2006, The Breeze added feeds, but lost them shortly thereafter, and apparently never fixed it. The DNR added feeds sometime in 2005. Still waiting on [...]

“deadlines only apply to print media”

I haven’t really noticed that TV3’s website is “easier to navigate” (Is it? If so, how?) but I did notice four new videos up on their site that appear to be little jabs at the DNR’s E-edition.

the other tower

The top story from the county yesterday and today is that the BoS voted not to allow Shentel to erect a 150 foot cell tower in Massanetta Springs (as it would mar the view).
But a week ago, this cell tower on the corner of Chesapeake and Grace wasn’t there. It mysteriously appeared late last week. [...]

One Court Square

Last year, there were some setbacks in the city’s high tech plans other than the IPv6 flop. One Court Square, that empty building between TV3 and First Presbyterian Church downtown, was once touted as the new home for high tech businesses downtown.
